Abstract
Pedro “Piquito” Marcano was one of the foremost Puerto Rican bandleaders, composers, and vocalists of the 1930s and 1940s in New York City. He is most remembered as the founder and director of the Cuarteto Marcano. The collection is made up of 40 audiocassette tapes containing interviews Glasser conducted with Puerto Rican musicians, people involved in the music industry and relatives as part of the research for her dissertation and subsequent book, My Music is My Flag: Puerto Rican Musicians and Their New York Communities, 1917-1940, published in 1995 by University of California Press. About the Collections
Our collections consist of personal papers from prominent Puerto Rican artists, elected officials, social activists, writers, as well as the records of community-based organizations. Our largest collection, the Offices of the Government of Puerto Rico in the United States (OGPRUS) Records, measures approximately 2,900 cubic feet and contains an extraordinary amount of information regarding Puerto Rican migrants and the government institutions established to assist them. The collections date from the 1890s to the present, and document Puerto Rican communities in the Northeast, Midwest, Florida, California and Hawaii.
